Business and electoral transformation
Thaksin trained as a police officer before building a telecommunications group. Thai Rak Thai won the 2001 election on a programme including low-cost health care, village funds and debt relief.
He became the first elected Thai prime minister to complete a full term and won re-election in 2005. Support was especially strong outside Bangkok, where his policies made national government more tangible to many voters.
Conflict, coup and return
Critics challenged his concentration of power and his government’s human-rights record. A military coup removed him in 2006, beginning a long period of conflict between movements aligned with and opposed to him.
Thaksin returned to Thailand in 2023. His legal cases, imprisonment and subsequent clemency remained part of a wider debate over institutions, political influence and equal treatment under law.
