- Bảo Đại was the thirteenth and last emperor of the Nguyễn dynasty. He abdicated during the August Revolution in 1945 and later served as chief of the State of Vietnam from 1949 to 1955.

- Ngô Đình Diệm was the first president of the Republic of Vietnam from 1955 to 1963. Nguyễn Văn Thiệu led it from 1967 until 21 April 1975, and Dương Văn Minh became its final president on 28 April before surrendering on 30 April.
