A career inside the party
Nguyễn Phú Trọng studied literature and built his career through the Communist Review, party theory and leadership posts in Hanoi. He later chaired the National Assembly before becoming general secretary in 2011.
His leadership stressed Marxist-Leninist discipline and the primacy of the Communist Party. A third term in 2021 confirmed an unusual concentration of institutional authority around him.
The blazing furnace era
Trọng expanded an anti-corruption campaign that investigated and removed ministers, provincial leaders and senior party officials. Supporters viewed it as essential discipline; critics noted selective enforcement, political consolidation and the limited independence of institutions.
Internationally, Vietnam deepened relationships with competing major powers while preserving its “bamboo diplomacy.” Trọng’s death in 2024 closed an era of political recentralisation that coincided with fast economic integration and constrained civic space.
