From colonial Vietnam to revolution

Born Nguyễn Sinh Cung in 1890, Hồ Chí Minh left French Indochina in 1911. Work and political organising in Europe and Asia connected Vietnamese anticolonialism with international socialist movements.

Using the name Nguyễn Ái Quốc, he advocated Vietnamese self-determination, helped establish communist organisations and returned in 1941. The Viet Minh then combined national liberation with revolutionary organisation during the Japanese occupation and the collapse of French colonial authority.

Independence, war and legacy

On 2 September 1945, Hồ Chí Minh proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. War with France ended in 1954 with partition at the Geneva Conference; he then led North Vietnam while conflict with South Vietnam and the United States escalated.

He died in 1969, six years before reunification. His image remains embedded in the Vietnamese state and anticolonial memory, while historians continue to assess revolutionary achievement alongside authoritarian rule, prolonged warfare and its human consequences.
