A southern organiser shaped by prison and war
Born Nguyễn Văn Cúc, Nguyễn Văn Linh entered anticolonial politics as a teenager. He survived two periods of imprisonment on Côn Đảo and built much of his later career in Saigon and the southern party organisation during the wars against France and the Republic of Vietnam.
After reunification he led Ho Chi Minh City, where arguments over private commerce and the pace of socialist transformation exposed tensions inside the party. Removed from the Politburo in 1982, he returned three years later as the national economy approached crisis.
Renovation without political pluralism
The Sixth Party Congress elected Linh general secretary in December 1986 and adopted Đổi Mới. The programme loosened price controls, recognised household production and encouraged a multi-sector economy, turning local experiments and policy debates into a national course.
Writing under the initials N.V.L., Linh used the press series “Things That Must Be Done Immediately” to attack corruption, waste and bureaucratic inertia. His reformism had firm limits: he defended Communist Party monopoly and became more cautious as socialist governments collapsed elsewhere. He retired from the top office in 1991.
