A revolutionary army from limited means
Võ Nguyên Giáp studied law and political economy, taught history and joined anticolonial organising. He worked with Hồ Chí Minh in China before returning to build a small armed force in northern Vietnam in 1944.
Without formal military-academy training, Giáp developed strategy around political organisation, local support and the ability to shift between guerrilla and conventional warfare. His forces grew into the People’s Army of Vietnam.
Command, controversy and memory
At Điện Biên Phủ in 1954, Vietnamese forces overcame a fortified French position after an immense logistical effort. Giáp remained defence minister during the later war, although operational authority and collective leadership changed over time.
He survived the war as an unusually visible member of the revolutionary generation. Celebrated for national independence, his record is also inseparable from campaigns that imposed severe losses on soldiers and civilians.
