From army officer to president
Nguyễn Văn Thiệu briefly joined the Việt Minh after the Second World War, then entered the French-backed Vietnamese National Army. He advanced in the armed forces and participated in the November 1963 coup that overthrew Ngô Đình Diệm.
After further military governments, Thiệu became chief of state in 1965 and won the presidency in September 1967. His government developed constitutional institutions and local administration while fighting a widening war, but it also restricted opposition and concentrated authority around the presidency.
Peace agreement and collapse
Thiệu was re-elected in an uncontested 1971 vote after his challengers withdrew. He opposed the 1972 draft peace settlement because it allowed North Vietnamese forces to remain in the South, yet accepted the January 1973 Paris agreement when Washington pressed for a conclusion.
After U.S. forces departed and American support declined, the Republic of Vietnam faced the 1975 northern offensive. Thiệu resigned on 21 April, left the country and spent his later life in exile. His record remains tied to both South Vietnamese state-building and the political and strategic failures that preceded its collapse.
