Revolutionary work and diplomacy
Born Nguyễn Châu Sa in 1927, Nguyễn Thị Bình entered anticolonial activism in the final months of the Second World War. She later worked through southern revolutionary organisations and became an international advocate for their political programme.
As foreign minister of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam, she led its delegation during the Paris peace talks. Her role required public diplomacy as well as negotiation among four parties whose positions were shaped by continuing war.
The Paris agreement and public office
On 27 January 1973, Bình signed the Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam. She was the only woman among its signatories and the only woman heading one of the four negotiating delegations.
After reunification she served as education minister and, from 1992 to 2002, as vice president of Vietnam. Her later work on peace, children and education extended a public career that had begun in revolution and reached its most visible moment at the negotiating table.
