Building an anticommunist state

Ngô Đình Diệm came from a Catholic mandarin family and served in the imperial administration before leaving public office under French rule. He returned as prime minister in 1954 while Vietnam was being divided after the First Indochina War.

With strong early American backing, Diệm defeated rivals, replaced the State of Vietnam with a republic and developed a centralised government. His administration resisted communist insurgency while also limiting opposition and political competition.

Crisis and coup

Power gathered around Diệm and members of his family, especially Ngô Đình Nhu. Displacement, rural security policies and unequal political access generated resistance; the 1963 Buddhist crisis exposed the regime’s coercion and declining support.

South Vietnamese generals overthrew Diệm with Washington aware of the plot, and he was killed on 2 November 1963. His fall destabilised the state he had built and remains central to debates over sovereignty, U.S. intervention and authoritarian modernisation.
