Vietnam’s reform era,
through eight lives.

Eight sourced biographies tracing how Đổi Mới moved from a 1986 policy turn into infrastructure, private enterprise, WTO membership and new forms of institutional authority.

Why these lives

Đổi Mới was not a single leader’s programme or an overnight conversion to markets. These lives connect the party debates that opened reform, the governments that implemented it, the institutions that managed its tensions and an entrepreneur who built within the new economy.

  1. 01

    The 1986 policy turn

Nguyễn Văn Linh gave political force to Đổi Mới, while Đỗ Mười carried reform through the Soviet collapse, stabilisation and Vietnam’s return to regional diplomacy.

  2. 02

    Implementation and infrastructure

Võ Văn Kiệt translated renovation into power, investment and external relations; Phan Văn Khải opened space for private enterprise and prepared WTO accession.

  3. 03

    WTO-era growth and its costs

Nguyễn Tấn Dũng led a decade of trade integration and rapid growth that also exposed weak oversight, debt and failures inside state-owned conglomerates.

  4. 04

    Institutions, discipline and enterprise

Nguyễn Phú Trọng, Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân and Trương Gia Bình connect party discipline, the legislature and the private technology economy created by reform.

Quick answers

Vietnamese reform era FAQs

Who launched Vietnam’s Đổi Mới reforms?
Đổi Mới was a collective policy turn rather than the work of one founder. Trường Chinh helped prepare the reassessment, the Sixth Party Congress adopted the programme in December 1986, and newly elected general secretary Nguyễn Văn Linh became its principal early advocate.
Which Vietnamese prime ministers implemented Đổi Mới?
Võ Văn Kiệt accelerated infrastructure and international opening, Phan Văn Khải advanced enterprise and trade reform, and Nguyễn Tấn Dũng led the government through WTO accession and its first decade of membership.
Why is business leader Trương Gia Bình included?
Trương Gia Bình co-founded FPT in 1988 and shows what reform made possible outside formal political office: a Vietnamese technology company expanding through software, telecommunications, education and global services.
Did Đổi Mới introduce political democracy?
No. Đổi Mới liberalised important parts of economic life while the Communist Party retained its monopoly of political power. Market opening and tighter or looser phases of political control developed together.
What period does the Vietnamese Reform Era cover?
This collection begins with the 1986 policy turn and follows implementation, international integration and institutional change into the twenty-first century. It treats Đổi Mới as an evolving process rather than a single event.
