A Seremban-based political career
Anthony Loke built his political career in Negeri Sembilan. He joined DAP as a young activist, worked within its youth and organisational structures and served as political secretary to veteran leader Lim Kit Siang before contesting elected office.
He won Lobak in the 2004 state election and Rasah in the 2008 general election. From 2013 he represented Seremban in Parliament and Chennah in the state assembly, giving him a profile that linked constituency organisation with national party strategy.
Transport minister after the 2018 election
Pakatan Harapan’s 2018 victory brought Loke into the federal cabinet as transport minister. The portfolio covered aviation, ports, rail and road transport, sectors that made implementation and public service delivery central to his national reputation.
His first term ended when the Pakatan Harapan government fell in February 2020. He returned to opposition as DAP prepared a leadership transition from the generation associated with Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng.
DAP secretary-general and a second cabinet term
DAP chose Loke as secretary-general in March 2022. After the 15th general election produced a hung Parliament, DAP joined the broad coalition supporting Anwar Ibrahim’s government, and Loke returned to the Transport Ministry on 3 December 2022.
The party’s 2025 congress retained him as secretary-general for another term. His leadership combined DAP’s established reform programme with the compromises required of a multi-party federal government.
The 2026 resignation decision
In September 2026, Loke announced that he would resign from the cabinet following DAP’s objection to the conditional pardon arrangements involving former prime minister Najib Razak. He submitted a letter to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on 28 September.
The resignation was not immediately effective. Loke said it would take effect when Najib began serving the remainder of his sentence under house arrest. Anwar asked him to continue his duties in the meantime, and no replacement had been appointed as of this page’s 4 October review. Describing that condition is essential: a submitted future resignation is not the same as having left office.
A test of generational leadership
Loke’s career illustrates DAP’s movement from opposition campaigning into sustained participation in federal government. That shift brought access to executive power but also exposed the party to decisions made by coalition partners.
His significance therefore lies in more than the transport portfolio. He became the organisational leader responsible for balancing party identity, electoral cooperation and cabinet responsibility during a fluid phase of Malaysian coalition politics.
