Growing up inside political change

Nurul Izzah Anwar is the eldest daughter of Anwar Ibrahim and Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. Her public life began unusually early after Anwar was dismissed from government in 1998, arrested and imprisoned. She became one of the family’s visible international and domestic advocates during the Reformasi movement.

That experience produced the nickname Puteri Reformasi, or Princess of Reformasi. It also placed her inside a movement that joined demands for Anwar’s release to broader arguments about judicial independence, civil liberties and accountable government.

Education and entry into Parliament

Nurul Izzah studied electrical engineering at Universiti Tenaga Nasional and later completed a master’s degree in international relations at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. She entered electoral politics in 2008 rather than pursuing a purely technical career.

Her victory in Lembah Pantai over cabinet minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil became one of the notable results of the 12th general election. She retained the urban Kuala Lumpur seat in 2013 and established an independent parliamentary profile on rights, social policy and institutional reform.

PKR leadership and Permatang Pauh

She served as a PKR vice-president from 2010 until resigning from the post in 2018. In that year’s general election she moved to Permatang Pauh, the Penang constituency long associated with Anwar and Wan Azizah, and won as Pakatan Harapan took federal power.

Nurul Izzah did not join the cabinet. Her relationship with formal party leadership shifted over the following years, particularly after the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in 2020. She lost Permatang Pauh in the 2022 election but was appointed again as a party vice-president.

The 2025 deputy-presidency contest

In May 2025, Nurul Izzah challenged incumbent Rafizi Ramli for the PKR deputy presidency. She won 9,803 votes and began a 2025–2028 term in the party’s second-highest office while her father served as both PKR president and prime minister.

That family relationship makes transparent sourcing especially important. The election result establishes that the office was won through a party contest; it does not remove legitimate public debate about political succession, internal party competition or the advantages of a prominent name.

A generational Reformasi figure

Nurul Izzah’s political identity combines family history with themes she has pursued in her own work, including women’s welfare, education, human rights and democratic institutions. Her parliamentary and party careers have also included defeat, resignation and return rather than a simple upward path.

Her importance to Malaysian political biography lies in that transition: a teenager speaking for an imprisoned parent became an elected legislator and then a senior leader responsible for the next phase of the party created by Reformasi.
