A young monarch inherits a developing state
Hassanal Bolkiah was educated in Brunei and Malaysia and trained at Sandhurst. He became sultan in 1967, inheriting institutions developed under his father but also a political order reshaped by the failed 1962 revolt and continuing emergency rule.
Negotiations with Britain culminated in the 1979 Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation. At midnight on 1 January 1984 he proclaimed Brunei a fully independent sovereign state and became its first prime minister.
Monarchy, prosperity and international membership
Oil and gas revenue financed extensive public services and a high-income economy. Brunei joined ASEAN on 7 January 1984 and the United Nations on 21 September, placing the small state within regional and global diplomatic institutions.
