Experimental art under censorship
San Minn studied art in Yangon and became associated with the Gangaw Village group, a loose network that pushed beyond officially favoured realism. His work used surreal bodies, animals and coded symbols to examine social pressure and political constraint.
He was imprisoned from 1975 to 1978 after taking part in an anti-government demonstration. Returning to art did not end official scrutiny: censors prevented Age of Full Bloom from being shown in 1979.
Building an alternative art infrastructure
In 1989 he co-founded Inya Gallery, which gave experimental artists a space outside tightly controlled state institutions. His paintings continued to approach political life indirectly, using visual ambiguity as both artistic strategy and practical defence.
National Gallery Singapore later acquired Age of Full Bloom and uses it to interpret the history of modern Southeast Asian art. That institutional afterlife has moved a once-censored image into a regional canon without removing the conditions under which it was made.
