Law, reserve service and the defence of Panay

Macario Peralta Jr. trained in law and as a reserve soldier before the Japanese invasion. He commanded the 61st Provisional Regiment of the United States Army Forces in the Far East during the defence of the Visayas.

After higher command surrendered, Peralta refused to give up organised resistance in Panay. He rebuilt a command from scattered soldiers and civilian networks under conditions of occupation.

Free Panay and regional guerrilla coordination

Peralta established the Free Panay Guerrilla Forces in July 1942. The organisation developed military units, intelligence and a shadow administration while seeking recognition and supplies from the returning Allied command.

His authority eventually extended beyond a single island as guerrilla groups in the central Philippines and Bicol recognised a coordinating role. That growth demonstrates how resistance could rebuild institutions from below rather than simply wait for liberation.

Liberation and a postwar political career

In early 1945, Panay guerrillas fought around Balantang and prepared for Allied landings. The combined campaign liberated Iloilo on 20 March. Local resistance provided intelligence, secured routes and reduced Japanese positions before and during the return of regular forces.

Peralta later served as senator and secretary of national defence. His postwar career carried the prestige of guerrilla command into the institutions of the independent republic, while also making military memory part of national politics.
