Law, mathematics and an election dispute
Aquilino Martin “Koko” Pimentel III studied mathematics at Ateneo de Manila and law at the University of the Philippines, then topped the 1990 bar examinations. He also worked with the National Youth Commission and in legal practice before seeking national office.
Pimentel placed just outside the winning twelve in the 2007 Senate count and challenged Juan Miguel Zubiri’s result. After Zubiri resigned in 2011 and the tribunal’s revised count placed Pimentel ahead, he was proclaimed with less than two years left in the term.
Senate presidency during a political realignment
Pimentel won full terms in 2013 and 2019. As president of PDP–Laban, he helped organise Rodrigo Duterte’s successful 2016 campaign and became Senate president when a broad majority formed at the opening of the new Congress.
His leadership period included early Duterte legislation and contentious investigations into the anti-drug campaign. A coalition shift in May 2018 led Pimentel to nominate majority leader Vicente Sotto III as the chamber’s next president.
Minority leadership and a family precedent
Pimentel later separated from the dominant PDP–Laban faction and served as Senate minority leader from 2022 to 2025. Election administration, federalism and institutional procedure remained recurring themes of his work.
He and his father, Aquilino Pimentel Jr., are the first parent and child to have each served as Philippine Senate president. Their careers connect opposition politics under Marcos to competing institutional roles in the Duterte and Marcos Jr. periods.
