Revolt, defeat and contested legacy

On 8 December 1962, the North Kalimantan National Army associated with the PRB launched an uprising across Brunei and neighbouring territories. British and Gurkha forces rapidly restored government control. Azahari, then in Manila, proclaimed an alternative North Borneo government.

The revolt destroyed the PRB as a legal political force and entrenched emergency rule. It also influenced the setting in which Brunei stayed outside Malaysia, but historians caution against treating the uprising as the only cause: oil revenue, royal precedence and federal terms were separate unresolved issues.
