Architecture for a new nation

Vann Molyvann studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and returned to Cambodia in 1956. Norodom Sihanouk appointed him to lead public architecture during an intense period of institution-building after independence.

His work joined reinforced concrete and modern planning with elevated floors, deep shade, cross-ventilation, water management and forms informed by Khmer architecture. The result was modern without treating Cambodian identity as decoration.

Landmarks, exile and preservation

The Chaktomuk Conference Hall, National Sports Complex and university buildings became the best-known works of New Khmer Architecture. Their civic scale expressed optimism in education, sport and public culture.

Vann Molyvann left after the 1970 coup, worked with the United Nations and returned in 1991. He later warned that uncontrolled development threatened Phnom Penh’s water systems and architectural heritage, making preservation part of his final public contribution.
