From finance to opposition politics

Born in Phnom Penh, Sam Rainsy spent much of his education and professional life in France. He returned during the UN transition, entered parliament with FUNCINPEC and briefly served as finance minister in the coalition formed after the 1993 election.

After leaving government, he built an opposition party around anti-corruption, labour and democratic-reform campaigns. The organisation eventually took his name and became a persistent electoral challenger despite violence, lawsuits and repeated periods of exile.

The CNRP and politics from exile

In 2012 the Sam Rainsy Party and Kem Sokha’s Human Rights Party joined to form the Cambodia National Rescue Party. The CNRP’s strong 2013 election result created the most serious parliamentary challenge to the CPP in the post-UNTAC era.

Sam Rainsy left Cambodia again in 2015 amid criminal cases and the loss of his parliamentary immunity. He has continued political advocacy abroad, while Cambodian authorities have pursued further convictions in absentia and barred attempted returns.
