Women’s organising and public office
Mu Sochua left Cambodia as a young woman and studied psychology and social work in the United States. After returning in 1989, she helped organise women around constitutional rights, domestic violence and human trafficking during the country’s political reconstruction.
She won a parliamentary seat in 1998 and entered the cabinet as minister of women’s and veterans’ affairs. Her work connected law reform with practical support for women facing exploitation, including cross-border trafficking.
Opposition leadership and exile
Sochua left government in 2004 and joined the opposition, later serving in the Sam Rainsy Party and the CNRP. She used parliament, court cases and international networks to campaign on gender, labour rights, land and electoral accountability.
She departed Cambodia in 2017 as pressure on the CNRP intensified. From abroad she has remained a prominent advocate for political prisoners, free elections and women’s participation, extending a public career that began with postwar social work.
