Agriculture and municipal government
Ong Kee Hui was born in Kuching in 1914. He studied agricultural science at Serdang College and worked in Sarawak’s Department of Agriculture before moving into business and public service.
His appointments to the Kuching Municipal Council and Council Negri placed him inside the territory’s changing representative institutions during the 1950s. He also served as president of the municipal council as Kuching prepared for a new political era.
Sarawak’s first political party
In 1959 Ong joined Stephen Yong and a multiracial group of organisers to form the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party. SUPP was Sarawak’s first political party, and Ong became its founding president.
The party channelled demands for self-government but initially opposed the proposed terms and timetable of Malaysia. Ong’s position therefore adds an important dissenting strand to a formation story sometimes told only through its eventual supporters.
From opposition to coalition
Ong served in Malaysia’s Parliament and spoke on federal arrangements affecting Sarawak. In 1970, after political and security negotiations, SUPP entered Sarawak’s governing coalition.
The decision reshaped state politics and brought Ong into the federal cabinet. He held ministerial responsibilities for local government and housing and later for science, technology and the environment.
A regional party’s national path
Ong stepped down from party leadership in 1982 and died in 2000. SUPP continued as one of Sarawak’s longest-lived political organisations.
His career shows how Sarawakian politics could move from anti-colonial organisation and opposition to negotiated participation in state and federal government. It also preserves the fact that the creation of Malaysia involved genuine argument inside Sarawak, not a single uniform position.
