Building a revolutionary organisation

Kaysone Phomvihane joined the anticolonial struggle while studying in Vietnam. He became a leading organiser of the Lao revolutionary movement and in 1955 took leadership of the party later renamed the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.

Although Souphanouvong was the movement’s prominent royal figure, Kaysone directed its party organisation and strategy. The movement survived coalition breakdowns, civil war and extensive foreign intervention before taking national power in 1975.

State-building and economic reform

As the new republic’s first prime minister, Kaysone oversaw a one-party state, socialist economic policies and close alignment with Vietnam. Collectivisation, postwar hardship and departures from the country marked the early period.

In 1986 the party adopted the New Economic Mechanism, which reduced central controls and widened the role of markets. Kaysone became president in 1991 and remained party leader until his death in 1992.
