Engineer, prince and revolutionary
Souphanouvong studied engineering in France and worked in Indochina before the upheavals of 1945 drew him into the independence movement. He organised resistance in southern Laos and was wounded in combat against returning French forces.
He later became the public face of the Pathet Lao. His royal background gave the movement symbolic reach, while its alliance with Vietnamese communists placed the Lao conflict inside the wider wars of Indochina.
Coalitions, war and the new republic
Souphanouvong participated in coalition governments intended to reconcile royalist, neutralist and Pathet Lao forces. Those arrangements repeatedly broke down as foreign intervention and civil war intensified.
After the Pathet Lao victory in 1975, he became the Lao PDR’s first president. Phoumi Vongvichit performed presidential duties during his later illness, but Souphanouvong formally remained president until 1991.
