A business career before politics
Gibran Rakabuming Raka was born in Surakarta in 1987, long before his father Joko Widodo moved from furniture manufacturing into city government. He studied partly in Singapore and developed a public identity through catering and food businesses rather than joining the bureaucracy or a party organisation immediately after university.
That commercial background distinguished him from many members of Indonesia’s political elite, but his family connection was impossible to separate from his later rise. By the time Gibran sought office, Jokowi had moved from mayor of Surakarta to governor of Jakarta and president of Indonesia. Every stage of the son’s political career therefore attracted questions about individual performance and inherited advantage at the same time.
Mayor of Surakarta
Gibran entered the 2020 Surakarta election with the nomination of PDI-P, the party that had supported his father’s rise. He won decisively and was inaugurated in February 2021. His mayoral term emphasised economic recovery after the pandemic, public events, market and neighbourhood improvements, and continued promotion of Surakarta as a cultural and visitor economy.
The city office gave him the elected experience that later became constitutionally decisive. Supporters presented the mayoralty as evidence that a younger executive could work through local government. Critics argued that access to nomination, attention and national networks demonstrated how family power can accelerate a career even inside a competitive electoral system.
The age ruling and an ethical crisis
Election law required presidential and vice-presidential candidates to be at least forty. In October 2023, Constitutional Court Decision 90 created an exception for someone who had held an office filled by general election. The ruling made the thirty-six-year-old mayor eligible, and Prabowo Subianto selected him as running mate.
The Court’s Ethics Council later found serious violations by Chief Justice Anwar Usman, who is Gibran’s uncle, and removed Anwar from the chief-justice position. The ethics decision did not cancel the eligibility ruling. That distinction matters: Gibran remained legally qualified, while the process that produced the exception became one of the election’s most consequential institutional controversies.
Indonesia’s youngest vice president
Prabowo and Gibran campaigned on continuity with the Jokowi government, including infrastructure, downstream processing and social programmes. KPU recorded 96,214,691 votes for their ticket—58.59 per cent of the valid national vote—enough to win without a runoff. The Constitutional Court later rejected challenges brought by both losing tickets.
Gibran took office on 20 October 2024 as Indonesia’s youngest vice president. His significance extends beyond age: he links a term-limited president to the succeeding administration and embodies a debate over whether elections can combine genuine voter choice with increasingly powerful family networks. His long-term record will depend on how independently and substantively he uses the vice presidency.
