From shipping to industrial land
Đặng Thành Tâm trained as a marine engineer at Vietnam Maritime University in Hải Phòng and worked for Saigon Shipping Company from 1988 to 1996. He then moved into industrial-zone development during the decade when Vietnam was opening further to foreign investment.
In 2002, Tâm helped establish Kinh Bac City Development Holding Corporation and went to Bắc Ninh to develop Quế Võ Industrial Park. The location combined prepared land, infrastructure and investor support for manufacturers entering northern Vietnam.
Building the platform behind factories
KBC expanded its industrial-park portfolio as electronics and other export manufacturers built Vietnamese production networks. Tâm also took part in business-policy forums, including the APEC Business Advisory Council and a government advisory council for the post-WTO programme.
Industrial parks sit between public planning and private development: companies need roads, power, approvals and local labour systems, while provinces compete for investment. Tâm’s career therefore illustrates both the infrastructure that enabled export growth and the close relationship between large property projects, policy access and capital.
