From Ukraine to Vingroup
Phạm Nhật Vượng studied geological economics in Moscow and began business in post-Soviet Ukraine. Technocom’s instant-noodle brand became successful before he returned his focus to Vietnam.
Vinpearl and Vincom grew through resorts, shopping centres and property. Their 2012 merger created Vingroup, which later entered healthcare, education, consumer services and technology while exiting some earlier lines.
The VinFast wager
VinFast began producing vehicles in 2019 and shifted its strategy toward electric models and international markets. The effort required large factories, new distribution systems and substantial continuing capital.
Vượng became VinFast chief executive in 2024 while remaining Vingroup chairman. The company’s expansion has made him a symbol of Vietnamese private-sector ambition, as well as of the financial and operational risks involved in building a global automaker.
