Education and a family-business inheritance
Shinta Kamdani was born in Jakarta in 1967 to Johnny and Martina Widjaja. Her company’s biographical account describes a family-business background, while the Forests Asia conference profile records her graduation from Barnard College in 1989. She later completed executive education at Harvard Business School in 2002. That programme is not identified as an MBA or another Harvard degree.
Taking responsibility for an established family enterprise posed a different challenge from starting a company without inherited operations. In the company-hosted account, she described beginning her leadership in 1999 by consolidating businesses under a holding structure. She also recalled having to establish credibility as a younger woman among employees accustomed to older male leaders.
What Sintesa Group does
Sintesa’s present corporate profile describes an Indonesian strategic investment holding company with four main areas: industrial products, consumer products, property and energy. Its history reaches back through the family’s earlier business activity. Those inherited origins should not be mistaken for a company personally founded by Shinta a century ago.
The reorganisation she describes involved bringing different operations under a common direction rather than building one consumer brand alone. Her company has also promoted a sustainability roadmap connected to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This establishes the group’s stated management approach; it does not by itself verify the environmental performance of every subsidiary or turn a sustainability ambition into an audited result.
Chairing the business dialogue around the 2022 G20
Kamdani chaired B20 Indonesia during the country’s 2022 G20 presidency. Hosted by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the B20 brought business participants into dialogue on issues including investment, digitalisation, clean energy and employment after the pandemic. It was a business engagement forum, distinct from the summit of national governments.
In an original interview before the Bali summit, Kamdani described the difficulty of negotiating among economies with different priorities. She highlighted the gap between developed and developing countries and the disruption caused by war and the pandemic. Her role involved assembling business recommendations and seeking common ground, not legislating those recommendations on behalf of G20 member states.
APINDO and employer representation
On 15 June 2023, APINDO’s national meeting elected Kamdani to lead the association for 2023–2028. Its own annual report identifies her as the first woman to hold that national leadership position. The programmes outlined at the election included economic planning, human-resources and industrial-relations certification, small-business support and work on stunting.
The association’s later activity shows the practical range of employer representation. A May 2024 meeting with APINDO Banten discussed industrial gas, placing energy supply and manufacturing conditions alongside the broader international agenda. Kamdani’s career thus links decisions inside a diversified family group with collective business advocacy, where the interests represented are those of employers rather than an entire government or workforce.
