Military logistics and business power
Nyo Saw graduated from the 23rd intake of Myanmar’s Defence Services Academy and held command and training posts before becoming quartermaster general in 2014. The quartermaster-general’s office manages military supply and procurement, making it one of the armed forces’ most important logistical institutions. He retired from active military service in 2020.
He also chaired the Myanmar Economic Corporation, one of the two major conglomerates owned by the armed forces. MEC controls businesses across strategic sectors and generates revenue outside ordinary civilian oversight. European Union sanctions records describe Nyo Saw’s roles in MEC, foreign-exchange supervision, military-linked economic organisations and fuel imports. These positions made him an important bridge between the command structure and the economy after the 2021 coup.
From council adviser to prime minister
In 2023 Nyo Saw became an adviser to State Administration Council chairman Min Aung Hlaing and then a member of the council. The SAC had combined executive, legislative and judicial power after the military removed the elected government in February 2021. On 31 July 2025 the military authorities ended the repeatedly extended state of emergency, dissolved the SAC and created new institutions to prepare for an election held during continuing civil war.
Min Aung Hlaing remained the central authority as acting president and head of the new State Security and Peace Commission, while Nyo Saw became prime minister and planning minister. Associated Press reporting described the appointment as a transfer of the prime-minister title to Min Aung Hlaing’s adviser rather than a relinquishing of overall military power. Nyo Saw represented the government at official events during this interim period.
Vice-president in the 2026 government
Military representatives in Parliament nominated Nyo Saw for vice-president in April 2026. The presidential electoral college selected Min Aung Hlaing as president, with Nyo Saw and Nan Ni Ni Aye as vice-presidents. They took office on 10 April. The official Union Government list names those three offices and the cabinet but does not include a prime minister, so Nyo Saw’s premiership ended when the new government was formed.
This distinction matters for current search queries. Nyo Saw was the military-appointed prime minister from 31 July 2025 through 10 April 2026 and is now first vice-president. Myanmar’s formal 2008 constitutional structure treats the president as head of state and government rather than establishing a permanent prime minister. Separately, the National Unity Government continues to identify Mahn Win Khaing Than as its own prime minister under a rival post-coup claim.
