A career inside public administration
Lawrence Wong studied economics in the United States and public administration at Harvard before entering Singapore’s civil service. He worked across finance, trade and health, led the Energy Market Authority and served as principal private secretary to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
Ministerial responsibility and the pandemic
Wong entered Parliament in 2011 and held portfolios including culture, national development, education and finance. As co-chair of the multi-ministry COVID-19 taskforce, he explained restrictions, economic support and reopening decisions during the most disruptive public-health crisis in independent Singapore.
Singapore’s fourth premiership
He was selected to lead the People’s Action Party’s fourth-generation team and succeeded Lee Hsien Loong on 15 May 2024. Wong has framed his leadership around social cohesion, economic adaptation and a refreshed compact between citizens and the state; the long-term record of that programme remains open and should be assessed with dated evidence.
