Military service and an early political rise

Lee Hsien Loong studied mathematics and computer science at Cambridge and public administration at Harvard. He served in the Singapore Armed Forces before entering politics in 1984, then held economic, defence and finance responsibilities on his way to the deputy premiership.

Twenty years as prime minister

As prime minister, Lee oversaw responses to the global financial crisis and COVID-19, expanded social support and promoted lifelong learning and digital government through SkillsFuture and Smart Nation. His administration also faced debate over inequality, immigration, political competition and the cost of living.

The fourth leadership transition

Lee handed the premiership to Lawrence Wong in May 2024 and remained in cabinet as senior minister. The transfer concluded a long succession process and made his record part of a larger question running through Singapore politics: how a dominant governing party renews itself across generations.
