Education, a first venture and Beta
Bùi Quang Minh graduated with honours from the University of Sydney, received a Fulbright scholarship and completed an MBA at Harvard Business School. His first Vietnamese consumer venture was Doco Donuts, a coffee-and-bakery chain in Hanoi.
In 2014, Minh founded Beta Group and opened its first cinema complex in Thái Nguyên. The strategy emphasized modern screens at prices and locations intended to reach students, middle-income consumers and audiences outside premium central-city districts.
Capital, franchising and a Japanese partnership
Beta Media raised capital from Vietnam Investment Group, Blue HK and Daiwa PI Partners as the cinema chain expanded. It also used franchising, while related businesses moved into film production and distribution.
In March 2025, Aeon Entertainment announced a Vietnamese joint venture with Beta Media—its first overseas expansion—and described Beta as operating twenty cinema complexes at the time. Minh’s story shows how a cultural business can also be an infrastructure and access business: site economics, ticket prices and local networks determine which audiences can participate.
