A repeat attempt at organized retail
Nguyễn Đức Tài studied finance and accounting at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City and later completed an MBA through the Franco-Vietnamese CFVG programme. After an earlier retail attempt failed, he and four partners founded Mobile World in 2004.
The model combined visible locations, documented products, consistent service and centralized operations at a time when Vietnam’s mobile-phone trade was still fragmented. Expansion accelerated after outside investment and conversion to a joint-stock company in 2007.
From phones to a retail operating system
Thegioididong.com reached all 63 provinces and municipalities in 2012. MWG added Điện Máy Xanh for consumer electronics, listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange in 2014 and began testing Bách Hóa Xanh grocery stores the following year.
Tài has worked across finance, marketing, supply, logistics, store development and general management before focusing on the chairmanship. His significance lies less in one product than in building a repeatable retail system—and in the continuing difficulty of transferring that system from phones and appliances into lower-margin formats such as groceries and pharmacies.
