Kapit, education and a political inheritance

Alexander Nanta Linggi was born in 1958 and attended school in Kapit and Kuching before studying business in Britain. He earned a higher national diploma and a degree in business studies, training that preceded careers in both business and public life.

His grandfather Tun Jugah Barieng was a paramount Iban leader, a signatory in the formation-era story of Malaysia and the first federal minister responsible for Sarawak affairs. Nanta has treated that connection as a public inheritance, but his own elected career was built over decades in the large upriver constituency of Kapit.

Building a career inside PBB

Nanta joined PBB in 1983 and progressed through its youth organisation. His first election, for Pelagus in 1991, ended in defeat, after which he served from 1992 to 2000 as political secretary to the Sarawak chief minister.

He won the Kapit parliamentary seat at the 1999 general election. Re-election in every subsequent contest made him one of Sarawak’s longest-serving federal representatives and gave PBB continuity across remote communities along the Rajang and Baleh river systems.

From rural development to a full cabinet portfolio

In 2013 Nanta became deputy minister of rural and regional development. The portfolio matched the infrastructure and service-delivery concerns of Kapit, where distance, river access and uneven road links shape daily life.

He entered the full federal cabinet in March 2020 as minister of domestic trade and consumer affairs. The ministry handled prices, consumer protection and supply-chain issues during the COVID-19 period, and he retained it when Ismail Sabri Yaakob formed a new administration in 2021.

GPS organisation and the Works Ministry

After the four Sarawak governing parties left Barisan Nasional in 2018, Nanta became secretary-general of GPS as well as PBB. That organisational role places him between the coalition’s state leadership, federal MPs and component-party machinery.

Anwar Ibrahim appointed him minister of works after the 2022 election. The portfolio covers federal roads, public buildings and construction standards, allowing a senior GPS figure to shape nationwide infrastructure while continuing to argue for better links in Sabah and Sarawak.

Why Alexander Nanta Linggi matters

Nanta’s biography spans three levels of political organisation: an upriver parliamentary constituency, Sarawak’s dominant party and coalition, and the federal cabinet. That combination makes him important to understanding how GPS converts state electoral strength into national influence.

His family history also creates a visible bridge between Malaysia’s founding generation and contemporary debates over development and federalism. The connection does not substitute for his own record, but it gives his public role unusual historical resonance.
