A PBB career spanning four decades

Abang Johari Openg was born in Limbang and pursued higher education in business management. He became active in PBB youth leadership in the 1970s, entering a party that has anchored Sarawak’s state government for much of Malaysia’s history.

He won Satok in 1981 and served there until 2021. Over the following decades he held a series of state portfolios, gaining experience in industrial development, housing, tourism, urban development and infrastructure before becoming deputy chief minister.

Succeeding Adenan Satem

Adenan Satem’s death in January 2017 created an unexpected succession. Abang Johari became Sarawak’s sixth chief minister and president of PBB, inheriting a strong electoral mandate and an agenda focused on greater recognition of Sarawak’s constitutional position.

His administration continued to press questions linked to the Malaysia Agreement 1963, revenue and administrative authority. These issues turned state–federal relations into both a policy programme and a source of bargaining power.

Creating GPS after the 2018 election

When Barisan Nasional lost federal power in 2018, PBB, PRS, SUPP and PDP left the national coalition. Abang Johari led them into Gabungan Parti Sarawak, a coalition organised explicitly around Sarawak rather than membership in a peninsula-led alliance.

GPS later supported different federal administrations while remaining institutionally separate from PH, BN and PN. That flexibility became especially important after GE15, when no national coalition won a parliamentary majority and Sarawak MPs were central to government formation.

A larger state mandate and the premier title

GPS won 76 of 82 seats in the 2021 Sarawak election. Abang Johari moved from Satok to Gedong, while the result consolidated his control of the state coalition and legislature.

In 2022, Sarawak changed the English style of its head of government from chief minister to premier. The change did not create a sovereign prime-ministership, but it carried political symbolism within the state’s autonomy agenda.

Why Abang Johari matters

Abang Johari’s national significance comes from the combination of state authority and federal leverage. GPS can support a federal government without surrendering its separate identity, giving Sarawak a direct institutional voice in coalition negotiations.

His biography also helps explain why Malaysian politics cannot be understood only through peninsula parties. State-based coalitions in Borneo shape national majorities, cabinet formation and debates about how powers and revenues are shared within the federation.
