A Bengali family and a Rajasthan childhood
Shreya Ghoshal was born in Berhampore, West Bengal, on 12 March 1984 and grew up near Kota in Rajasthan. In interviews she describes a home full of music, with her mother as her first teacher and her parents taking her to lessons and performances. The birthplace and the place where a child’s musical life develops need not be the same.
Her Hindustani training included lessons with Mahesh Chandra Sharma in Kota. Television’s Sa Re Ga Ma brought another opportunity, followed by guidance from Kalyanji. The family’s move to Mumbai in 1997 made a professional career more practical. These were successive stages of preparation, not a single discovery that replaced the need for training.
Devdas began before its release year
Sanjay Leela Bhansali chose Ghoshal as the singing voice associated with Aishwarya Rai’s Paro in Devdas. The film was released in 2002, but the work began while she was a teenager. In a July 2002 interview she remembered her first sitting as 9 March 2000; later recollections describe the project as a two-year education.
The precise sitting date falls shortly before her sixteenth birthday, whereas retrospective accounts commonly say she was sixteen. It is safer to preserve the distinction between a recalled first meeting, a recording period and the eventual release. Composer Ismail Darbar and experienced fellow singers formed part of the environment in which she learned to make a voice serve a character.
The voice is a performance, not the face on screen
Ghoshal’s Devdas work includes Bairi Piya with Udit Narayan and Dola Re with Kavita Krishnamurthy and KK. The commercial recording credits also identify her on Silsila Ye Chahat Ka, Morey Piya and Chalak Chalak. A screen actor, playback singer, composer and songwriter contribute different parts of the same musical scene.
She has described imagining Paro’s confidence, innocence and pain while singing. That does not make the recorded character her own life story. Playback requires an interpretation that can join another performer’s face and body while remaining recognisable as vocal work. The success of that joining can make the labour behind it easy to overlook.

Many languages, many composer relationships
By her 2009 Bollywood Hungama interview, Ghoshal was discussing work in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi and Bengali as well as Hindi. She credited relationships with composers including Ismail Darbar, Anu Malik and M. M. Keeravani, known in Hindi cinema as M. M. Kreem. Multilingual work was already a central part of the career, not a later supplement to a Hindi identity.
The first National Film Award recognised Bairi Piya in the awards for 2002. A later government announcement, in August 2023, named her for Maayava Chaayavaa from the Tamil film Iravin Nizhal. These records illustrate a career across film industries; they should not be compressed into a list that assigns every song or honour to Hindi cinema.
A character’s voice can require restraint
In Filmfare’s account of a later interview, Ghoshal described changing her approach to Sun Raha Hai Na for Aashiqui 2 after producer Mukesh Bhatt wanted a voice suited to the inexperienced singer played by Shraddha Kapoor. A technically more mature performance was not necessarily the right dramatic performance.
This is a useful counterweight to accounts built only around range or high notes. The choice of tone, degree of ornament and apparent experience can all affect a character. Her memories of learning from other singers also show how an established performer continues to negotiate direction rather than simply delivering a fixed signature sound.

Concerts bring the singer into view
The 2023 Moneycontrol interview places Ghoshal’s film work beside concerts, independent recordings and a collaboration with the Berklee Indian Ensemble. A live audience encounters the singer as the visible performer, changing the arrangement familiar from playback. Songs associated with several actors can become part of one musician’s stage repertoire.
Her official biography records international performances, but promotional superlatives and streaming totals are not treated here as independently measured rankings. The more durable account follows the work: childhood training, a demanding first film, collaborations across languages, and the continuing adjustment between a recorded character and a performer facing a live audience.
