A Lagos beginning and a career in several forms
Sefi Atta was born in Lagos in 1964. Her author biography identifies a body of work that includes adult fiction, a children’s book, drama and screenwriting. Those forms carry different relationships to readers and performers: a novel is encountered on the page, while a broadcast or stage play also depends on production. This variety is central to her professional history. It makes a book-only chronology incomplete and cautions against treating an adaptation credit as authorship of every part of a film. The record supports a writer working across media without requiring an account of her private life.
Everything Good Will Come and its publication record
The author’s bibliography dates Everything Good Will Come to 2005. Interlink’s product record, distributed by Simon & Schuster, describes a novel following Enitan and her friendship with Sheri against Nigerian familial and political pressures. This is the publisher’s account of the book, not an independent reading offered here. The same record displays a December 2012 date for a particular hardcover product and ISBN. That later product date cannot replace the work’s first-publication year. Keeping those levels separate allows readers to identify both the novel’s place in Atta’s career and the edition they may actually encounter.
Recognition did not stop the developing bibliography
Atta received the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa in 2006 and the Noma Award for Publishing in Africa in 2009. Her later novels include Swallow, A Bit of Difference, The Bead Collector and The Bad Immigrant. The author’s current bibliography also lists Good-for-Nothing Girl (2024). These titles document continuing publication after the debut’s recognition. An award date and a book date answer different questions, and neither should be silently substituted for the other. The sequence provides several entry points into her work without turning a career profile into an unearned critical verdict on books not examined in full.
Stories and writing for performance
News from Home is listed as a 2010 short-story collection, and Indigene as a 2025 collection. Her works page separately records BBC radio plays: An Engagement in 2002, Makinwa’s Miracle in 2004 and A Free Day in 2007. It also records The Engagement at Lagos’s MUSON Centre in 2005, with Joke Silva producing and Ifeoma Obianwu directing. These specific credits make visible the collaborators and institutions around dramatic writing. An Engagement and The Engagement should retain their own titles, dates and medium rather than being collapsed merely because their names resemble each other. The entries do not themselves establish the complete contents of either script.
Publishing, adaptation and literary participation
Sefi Atta: Selected Plays appeared in 2019, and the children’s book Drama Queen in 2018. Her author biography records that she co-wrote a film based on Swallow in 2021. A film adaptation is a further production event, distinct from the novel’s 2010 entry in that bibliography. She also served as a judge for the Caine Prize in 2019 and a juror for the Neustadt prize in 2010. These roles show participation in literary assessment as well as the production of her own work. Taken together, her publications and performance credits support an account of durable, varied literary work, while leaving detailed evaluation to readers and viewers of the works themselves.
