Armagh and a Belfast apprenticeship
Muldoon grew up near The Moy in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. At Queenโs University Belfast he encountered Seamus Heaney and the Belfast Group. His first collection, New Weather, appeared in 1973. The group gave a young poet a setting for testing work among other writers while retaining a distinct voice.

Making literature audible
He worked for BBC Radio Ulster from 1973 to 1985 and television from 1985 to 1986. Faces of Ireland and Irish Poetry brought established and emerging writing to audiences; Bazaar made writers familiar as radio voices. Monkeys, his play about John DeLorean, reached BBC television in 1989. Literary production involved commissioning, presentation and broadcasting as well as writing.

An international poetic career
Collections including Why Brownlee Left, Quoof and Meeting the British were followed by Moy Sand and Gravel, which won the Pulitzer and Griffin prizes. His work also crosses into criticism, childrenโs books and libretti. The Poetry Foundation characterizes his handling of inherited forms as a combination of experiment and tradition.
He served as Oxford Professor of Poetry from 1999 to 2004 and edited poetry at The New Yorker from 2007 to 2017.
Teaching, institutions and later recognition
The Royal Household announced his 2017 Gold Medal for Poetry on the recommendation of its poetry committee. The announcement recognized a body of work rather than a single newly issued volume.
At Princeton he led creative writing, the Atelier and the founding Lewis Center for the Arts. He transferred to emeritus status on 1 July 2025. His Northern Irish formation and long American teaching career remain distinct geographical parts of this Irish literary archive.
