A voice from outside the old star system
Born Nora Villamayor, Aunor sold water at a railway station and entered amateur singing contests before winning Tawag ng Tanghalan. Recording success led to television and film, where her appearance and background challenged the industry’s established image of a leading woman.
She developed a restrained acting style capable of carrying melodrama without losing social detail. Roles in Bona, Thy Womb, The Flor Contemplacion Story and other films kept working-class women at the centre of the frame.
