A voice from outside the old star system
Born Nora Villamayor, Aunor sold water at a railway station and entered amateur singing contests before winning Tawag ng Tanghalan. Recording success led to television and film, where her appearance and background challenged the industry’s established image of a leading woman.
She developed a restrained acting style capable of carrying melodrama without losing social detail. Roles in Bona, Thy Womb, The Flor Contemplacion Story and other films kept working-class women at the centre of the frame.
Bona: performer, producer and a restored film
Aunor was not only the lead performer in Lino Brocka’s Bona: she also produced the film. Made in 1980, it follows a young woman whose devotion to a minor actor leaves her doing domestic work and enduring humiliation. The Cannes restoration account connects the production with her desire to move beyond commercial blockbusters into more auteur-led films.
Bona screened at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in 1981 and returned in Cannes Classics in 2024 as a restored print. Kani Releasing and Carlotta Films presented the new 4K version, restored at Cité de Mémoire from the original 35mm picture and sound negatives, with audio work by L.E. DIAPASON. The 2024 selection marks the older film’s restoration, not a new film starring Aunor or a Palme d’Or award.
Himala and a national artistic legacy
In Ishmael Bernal’s Himala, Aunor played Elsa, a young woman whose reported visions transform an isolated village. The performance’s quiet intensity became inseparable from the film’s critique of belief, spectacle and desperation.
The Philippines named her National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022. When she died in 2025, official and public memorials recognised both the star known as the “Superstar” and the actor whose best work enlarged the moral and emotional range of Philippine cinema.
