From factory work to a diversified group
Tan moved from Fujian to the Philippines as a child and studied chemical engineering at Far Eastern University while working in the tobacco industry. Fortune Tobacco, established in 1966, became the base from which he entered banking, beverages, spirits, property, education and aviation.
Allied Bank, Asia Brewery, Tanduay and Philippine Airlines made the group unusually broad. In 2012 and 2013, a corporate restructuring placed many of the family’s interests under LT Group, where Tan remains chairman and chief executive while a younger generation holds expanding operating roles.
Political controversy and the legal record
Tan’s business relationship with Ferdinand Marcos was repeatedly examined after the 1986 democratic transition. In 1987, the Republic, through the Presidential Commission on Good Government, filed a civil complaint alleging that Marcos and Tan had acquired assets through favours, concealed interests and other improper arrangements. Tan and the other respondents disputed those claims.
In 2023, the Supreme Court affirmed the Sandiganbayan’s dismissal of the complaint. The Court did not treat the allegations as established facts: it held that the Republic’s evidence failed to prove undue advantage, unjust enrichment and related elements, and that much of the documentary material lacked the required evidentiary foundation. The controversy remains part of Tan’s historical context, but the allegations and the court outcome must be stated separately.
