From migration to mass retail
Sy moved from Fujian to Manila as a child and learned retail work in his family’s small store. After wartime losses, he rebuilt through footwear trading and opened ShoeMart in 1958.
The business expanded from shoes into department stores and supermarkets. SM City North EDSA, opened in 1985, placed a large shopping complex at the centre of a growing metropolitan consumer economy.
