An electrical engineer enters semiconductor research
Samsung’s February 2013 board profile records Kwon’s birth on 15 October 1952, an electrical-engineering degree from Seoul National University in 1975 and a Stanford electrical-engineering doctorate in 1985. Its degree wording is retained without converting the undergraduate award to a different qualification.
He joined Samsung’s US Semiconductor Research Institute in 1985. POSTECH’s later institutional account associates him with leadership of the 64-megabit DRAM development in 1992. That is a team-development context, rather than evidence that he personally invented every component of the product.
From memory to System LSI
The board profile charts his progression from vice president of the memory division in 1995–1997 through System LSI posts. He led System LSI research and development, became president of that business in 2004, and headed the semiconductor business from 2008 to 2011.
Memory stores information, while System LSI concerns a different range of integrated-circuit functions. His career crossed those organisational boundaries. Technical judgement had to be joined to the allocation of people and resources across businesses, rather than being reduced to the specifications of one successful chip.

Executive responsibility and a planned departure
Samsung’s 13 October 2017 release identifies Kwon as chief executive from 2012 and Samsung Display chief executive from 2016. It announced his plan to leave the Device Solutions leadership and not seek re-election to the board or its chairmanship when his term ended in March 2018.
The release records his own explanation that the company needed new leadership amid difficult internal and external conditions. It is a dated announcement of intention, not a record that every office ended on 13 October. His responsibilities spanned engineering, operations and corporate succession.

Returning to the problem of developing people
On 28 September 2026, Kwon joined a POSTECH discussion with its president and four semiconductor graduate students. The university’s 26 October report describes questions about becoming specialists, moving into leadership and creating room for failure. It also records his emphasis on leaders taking responsibility and giving colleagues freedom to act.
This later contribution concerned the conditions in which engineers work and learn. It complements the product milestones without turning a university dialogue into proof of a management method’s effectiveness. The same distinction applies to reading semiconductor specifications: a product’s rated capacity and transfer rate answer different questions.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions about Kwon Oh-hyun
- Was the 2017 release a record of immediate departure from every role?
- No. It included a future board-term endpoint and plans for several responsibilities.
- Is a memory device’s capacity its transfer rate?
- No. Storage quantity and data movement are separate measurements; the linked technical guide works through the units.
