History, teaching and sculpture
Born William Trevor Cox in Mitchelstown, County Cork, Trevor was the son of a bank official and his wife Gertrude.
He studied history at Trinity College Dublin and married Jane Ryan in 1952. Teaching and sculpture supplied his early livelihood in Ireland and England. Church commissions and classroom work preceded the career for which readers now know him.
Advertising and a literary livelihood
In the early 1960s Trevor worked as an advertising copywriter at Notleyโs in London. The Old Boys brought major recognition, including the Hawthornden Prize. He subsequently became a full-time writer. The transition did not mean abandoning other forms: his career also included radio and television drama, adaptations and continuing short-story publication.

The long and the short forms
His later fiction included Two Lives, The Story of Lucy Gault and Love and Summer, alongside story collections such as After Rain and Cheating at Canasta. Penguin issued a two-volume Collected Stories in 2009.
Love and Summer was published in 2009 and longlisted for the Booker Prize. The novelโs Irish setting belonged to a writing life sustained largely in England.
Recognition and influence
He received the David Cohen Literature Prize in 1999 and an honorary knighthood in 2002. Last Stories, published after his death, brought together his final stories.
Trevor died in 2016.
In her later account of reading him, Elizabeth Strout singles out a voice that avoids calling attention to itself and a compassion extending across characters. Her testimony explains an influence through craft, not simply through shared subject matter.
