Education and television
Enright was born in Dublin and studied at Pearson College in Canada before returning to Ireland.
Her education continued at Trinity College Dublin, followed by an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia in 1987. She worked as an RTÉ television producer and director from 1987 to 1993. Writing developed alongside that practical experience of making programmes.
Stories, novels and motherhood
The Portable Virgin, her first story collection, appeared in 1991 and won the Rooney Prize. She became a full-time writer in 1993.
The Wig My Father Wore and What Are You Like? established a continuing novel-writing career. Making Babies brought motherhood into an essay form; Taking Pictures returned to short fiction. Her bibliography crosses genres rather than following a single ladder from stories to novels.
An international audience and a public role
The Gathering won the Booker Prize in 2007. Enright became the inaugural Laureate for Irish Fiction in 2015.
The laureateship ran until 2018. Yale’s prize citation describes her use of changing viewpoints and time to represent consciousness and memory.
The Gathering’s opening makes the act of telling itself difficult: its narrator wants to bear witness while questioning what can be remembered.
A continuing range
Later books include The Green Road, Actress and The Wren, The Wren, followed by the essay collection Attention in 2025. Her university profile lists her as a full professor in Creative Writing.
She received a Windham-Campbell Prize in 2025. The citation emphasizes the unsettled need for belonging running through her fiction, connecting formal invention with emotional and social life.
