Technical study and a remembered act of protest
Sudha Murty was born in 1950 in Shiggaon, in what is now Karnataka. She trained in engineering and pursued postgraduate computer science at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. Her later identity as a storyteller grew from a working life in technical education and employment, rather than replacing a purely literary apprenticeship.
In her published recollection for Tata, she describes protesting a Telco advertisement that excluded women applicants. A postcard to J. R. D. Tata was followed by an interview and a job in 1974. The account is valuable first-person testimony; its reconstructed dialogue and remembered timing remain memoir, rather than a verbatim personnel record.
Engineering, family and the move towards social work
Murty worked at Telco, now Tata Motors, from 1974 to 1982. Her account connects that employment to her meeting and marriage with N. R. Narayana Murthy. It also recalls J. R. D. Tata urging successful people to give back to society, a story she uses to explain her own sense of obligation.
Infosys Foundation began in 1996 with Murty as chairperson. The foundation’s annual report records her retirement on 31 December 2021, after twenty-five years. Her charitable leadership is a substantial part of her life, but it should not be confused with founding or managing the software company itself.
An author working in two languages and several forms
Murty’s published work includes Kannada and English novels, nonfiction, travel writing and stories for children. The range matters because a remembered encounter, a fictional household and a traditional tale make different claims on the reader. The familiar plain style does not make all her books the same genre.
Her publisher places Wise and Otherwise’s first publication in 2002 and identifies a revised Penguin edition in 2006. The older collection offers a useful entry into her writing about people met through travel and social work. Its subtitle, A Salute to Life, signals an ethical and affirmative purpose rather than a disinterested survey of society.
Everyday encounters become moral narratives
In Wise and Otherwise, an encounter generally leads to a reconsideration of behaviour or judgement. The narrator’s work brings her into contact with people whose circumstances differ sharply from her own. The literary interest lies partly in how an incident is selected and arranged to become a lesson.
Publisher-selected passages make uncertainty itself part of that moral vocabulary: living is compared to facing an examination without an agreed syllabus or ready answers. That analogy complicates the idea that the book is only a set of instructions. Its reader is also being asked to recognise the limits of advance preparation.
Accessibility and the question of perspective
Samiksha Kharat’s signed review in Modern College’s library newsletter praises the collection’s observation and accessible language while noting that some situations may feel emotionally or personally biased. It is a student reader’s response, not a claim of scholarly consensus. The tension nevertheless offers a productive critical question: how much room does a lesson leave for another person’s explanation?
An apparently transparent style still has a narrator who chooses an ending and interprets motives. Reading Murty critically can therefore mean appreciating the invitation to generosity while asking who speaks, who is represented and which social conditions exceed an individual solution. Those are questions for the stories, not allegations about the people in them.
A later public role with dates kept distinct
Murty entered Rajya Sabha as a nominated member in 2024. Sansad TV records the oath-taking, while PRS’s parliamentary tracker shows activity through the 2026 monsoon session. These sources support a continuing parliamentary role at the review date; the nomination does not turn her writing into an official policy statement.
Older publisher biographies still call her the Infosys Foundation chairperson. The foundation’s own retirement record takes precedence for that role. Her overlapping identities as engineer, writer, philanthropist and parliamentarian are more informative when their dates and responsibilities remain visible.
