Education and a move into sales
Kavashe grew up in Taita Taveta County and trained in education at Moi University. Her later qualifications included an MBA from the University of Nairobi. She entered a vehicle business without an engineering degree, learning its technical vocabulary and products through work with colleagues.
She joined General Motors’ East African operations in 1995. The company biography describes subsequent sales and marketing responsibilities in Kenya and South Africa, as well as management-development programmes. Her career therefore developed inside an established regional business rather than through founding a new automaker.
Managing an assembly operation
She had moved into the managing director role by the early 2010s. Bamburi Cement’s 2024 profile describes that transition after a series of sales and marketing jobs.
The 2020 interview describes expansion of production lines, dealer relationships and after-sales service. Kavashe presented management as outward-looking work supported by an operating team, and discussed bringing pickup assembly back to Kenya. Those observations concern an assembler’s development; they do not establish that every component was manufactured locally.
Boards and the next generation
Kavashe also developed a portfolio of board and industry responsibilities. The company biography lists a Bamburi directorship and BAT Kenya board chairmanship. In her 2020 interview she discussed helping women prepare for board positions and mentoring younger colleagues, drawing on her own experience of being mistaken for someone other than the managing director.
