Reading, Daet and an interrupted university education
Ricardo “Ricky” Lee was born in Daet, Camarines Norte, on 19 March 1948, according to UP’s Plaridel award dossier. His early life included parental loss, care from relatives and time reading in the town library. Published short fiction and a move to Manila helped make writing a possible vocation, but not an uncomplicated route to security.
He entered UP’s AB English program in 1966 without completing the degree. His later work as a teacher should not be used to invent a university graduation. He also experienced detention during Martial Law; his own later lecture recalls being imprisoned in 1974. These experiences form part of his history without explaining every character or theme he subsequently wrote.
Screenplays built around competing perspectives
Lee’s filmography includes Salome in 1981, Himala and Moral in 1982, and Karnal in 1983. His work on these films was as a screenwriter, distinct from the directors’ contributions. Identifying that role matters when discussing a medium made through collaboration among writers, performers, directors and production teams.
Salome presents different versions of a woman’s story, making the audience confront the problem of whose account to believe. Moral follows four women through changing personal and social circumstances. These are specific narrative structures, not simply labels such as social realism: they distribute attention among different voices and place women’s choices within pressures exerted by family, relationships and institutions.

Himala and dialogue revised through observation
Himala, directed by Ishmael Bernal, follows Elsa, a young woman claiming visions and healing powers, and the community that gathers around her. Its questions involve belief, need and the authority that develops around a public claim. Lee’s screenplay is central to those questions, but the finished film also depends on performance and direction.
In a CCP account of a screening and discussion, Lee described revising Elsa’s concluding speech after observing the location, filmed material and sick extras. The anecdote gives a practical view of writing: dialogue can change when a writer responds to what a production reveals. It also guards against treating a famous final speech as if it arrived untouched and isolated from the people making the film.

Fiction, free workshops and recognition
Lee began free screenwriting workshops in 1982. Trip to Quiapo, published in 1998, consolidated an established teaching practice rather than marking its beginning. His fiction includes Para Kay B in 2008, Si Amapola sa 65 na Kabanata in 2011 and Bahay ni Marta in 2018. Si Amapola combines a gay manananggal protagonist with election politics and popular culture, showing the place of fantasy alongside his social concerns.
UP awarded him Gawad Plaridel in 2015. PUP conferred a Doctorate in Humanities, honoris causa, in 2019: an honorary qualification, not an earned doctorate. In 2022 he became National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts. Although he has a substantial literary output, that recognition belongs to the film and broadcasting category, not Literature.
