Why this life matters
His later cofounding of Arc with Silvana Konermann and Patrick Hsu connects technology entrepreneurship with a different organisation for supporting scientific research.
Timeline
Key moments
Student award
Won Young Scientist.
Company formation
Cofounded Stripe in the United States.
Research organisation
Cofounded Arc with Konermann and Hsu.
Ireland, student research and MIT
Limerick County Council’s 2005 annual report records Patrick Collison as the Castletroy College student who won that year’s Young Scientist award. It documents a civic reception on 21 March.
Collison’s own account says that he grew up in Ireland and previously studied at MIT.
Before Stripe, Patrick and John were among four main shareholders in Auctomatic, a US-registered company. A contemporary report quotes John dating its start to February 2007. Its software helped businesses manage auction-site sales.
These records establish an early scientific and technical setting without turning an award into evidence that every later product followed directly from the winning project.
Building Stripe with John Collison
In prepared testimony to a US congressional committee in March 2025, Collison described founding Stripe in the United States with his brother John in 2010 to make online payments easier for businesses. His account traced the company from card payments toward a wider set of financial connections.
Stripe’s leadership record distinguishes Patrick’s cofounder and CEO role from John’s cofounder and president role.
The shared founding is central to the biography; neither a company name nor one executive’s title substitutes for its wider technical organisation.
Supporting a different kind of institution
Arc Institute was founded in 2021 by Silvana Konermann, Patrick Hsu and Collison. The Palo Alto nonprofit describes long-term support for investigators and partnerships with Stanford, UC Berkeley and UCSF. Its founders had previously collaborated on Fast Grants.
This is a separate institutional venture from Stripe. Its stated research model describes how support is organised; it is not proof that a particular treatment has worked or that funding alone caused a scientific result.

Public interests beyond the company
Collison’s personal site places him in California and identifies economic growth, entrepreneurship and science among his interests.
The Rhine Group’s profile identifies him as a co-chair and co-founder and associates his public work with innovation and European competitiveness.
His career therefore spans a commercial platform and institutions concerned with research and economic development. Reading the named records separately preserves the distinction between an executive’s argument, an organisation’s purpose and an independently measured outcome.
