Titi origins and science and management education
Lim Wee Chai was born on 7 January 1958 in Titi, Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan. His personal account describes early exposure to his family’s rubber-trading business. That provides background to his later manufacturing career without treating childhood experience as a complete explanation of the company’s subsequent development.
Top Glove’s annual report records a physics honours degree from Universiti Malaya in 1982 and an MBA from Sul Ross State University in 1985. It separately records a Management PhD from Universiti Selangor in 2015 and an honorary Doctor of Business Administration from Oklahoma City University in 2016. The honorary American doctorate should not be confused with the earlier MBA.
A founding partnership and public-company growth
Lim and his wife, Tong Siew Bee, co-founded Top Glove in 1991, beginning with one factory and one production line. Tong’s founding contribution is explicit in the corporate record and should not be reduced to a family connection. Lim later became associated with the executive chairmanship as the manufacturer expanded.
The business listed in Malaysia on 27 March 2001 and gained a Singapore Exchange secondary listing on 28 June 2016. These are separate corporate milestones, not two founding dates. His position as founder and executive chairman is also distinct from the responsibilities assigned to a managing director or chief executive in the company’s management structure.
Labour scrutiny and remediation
Top Glove’s covered Malaysian disposable-glove production became subject to U.S. import restrictions. Customs and Border Protection issued a Withhold Release Order on 15 July 2020, followed by a forced-labour finding published on 29 March 2021. These were regulatory actions concerning merchandise and manufacturing conditions, not a personal criminal conviction of Lim.
In September 2021, CBP recorded satisfactory evidence that the covered gloves were no longer manufactured with forced labour and modified the finding, allowing relevant imports from 10 September. Both the earlier scrutiny and the later determination belong in the record. The modification does not mean the original finding never occurred, or establish standards for every subsequent operation indefinitely.

Philanthropy and continuing leadership
Top Glove Foundation was established in 2009, adding an institutional channel for education and healthcare support. NUS provides a specific example of Lim’s educational giving: a S$1 million gift associated with the Lim Wee Chai Visiting Professorship in medicine, established in 2023. This is distinct from the company’s production and labour responsibilities.
The exchange-filed financial results dated 6 October 2026 continue to identify Lim as executive chairman. His ongoing role belongs within a publicly listed manufacturing business with operational and governance obligations. No unverified net-worth estimate or unqualified claim of market leadership is needed to explain that career, and philanthropy does not by itself resolve questions raised by labour scrutiny.
