Penang origins and overseas experience
Vijay Eswaran is a Malaysian entrepreneur whose own website places his birth in Penang in 1960. His corporate biography describes higher education in the United Kingdom and United States, followed by employment in technology and consulting in North America. He returned to Asia in the early 1990s.
His personal accounts describe driving a taxi while studying and travelling in Europe before establishing his business career. Those details are autobiographical rather than independently verified measures of success. The selected institutional records do not settle precise degree titles or graduation years, so these are not added to his education history.
QI Group and the QNET business model
Eswaran co-founded QI Group in 1998. Its development began with direct selling and expanded into interests including education, hospitality and retail. QNET is the group’s direct-selling business; the group and that operating brand should not be treated as interchangeable names for every activity associated with him.
QNET describes independent distributors selling products, earning retail profits and commissions, and building distributor teams whose sales contribute to compensation. This is a multilevel direct-selling structure. Explaining those mechanics is more useful than promotional promises: neither participation nor a founder’s biography establishes that distributors are guaranteed to earn an income.
Education, books and philanthropic institutions
Eswaran helped establish Quest International University in partnership with the Perak state government and remains chairman of its University Council. That is an institutional governance role, separate from an academic qualification. Pannasastra University in Cambodia conferred an honorary doctorate in Economics and Global Business in 2016; it is not an earned research doctorate.
His books include In the Sphere of Silence, launched in 2004. His philanthropic activities involve RYTHM Foundation and the Vijayaratnam Foundation. Taarana, established through RYTHM in 2011 for children needing special education, gives a specific example of that work without treating every institutional claim as an independent assessment of educational outcomes.
Regulatory scrutiny and the limits of the record
In January 2023, India’s Enforcement Directorate announced searches and account freezes in a Vihaan-related investigation based on a Mumbai police FIR naming QNET, Eswaran and others. The agency identified Vihaan Direct Selling India as QNET’s Indian master franchisee. These were investigative statements and allegations, not a court’s final finding of personal guilt.
In its response to questions received in January 2023, Vihaan denied money-laundering and shell-company allegations, said it offered products rather than investments or deposits, and said it was cooperating with investigators. No final disposition of that specific proceeding was verified for this article. Separate litigation cited by the company is not presented as resolving the ED investigation.
