Learning the group from operating companies

Gokongwei studied finance and applied science at the University of Pennsylvania, then built experience across the companies created by his father, John Gokongwei Jr. Aviation became one of his most visible responsibilities as Cebu Pacific developed a lower-fare model for domestic and regional travel.

He became JG Summit president and chief operating officer in 2000. Rather than wait for a single retirement event, the group began a planned transition that gave professional chief executives more authority inside its major businesses and moved the next generation toward strategy, capital allocation and governance.

Succession under pressure

Gokongwei became president and CEO in May 2018. His stated agenda included digital transformation, customer focus, leadership development and sustainability across Universal Robina, Cebu Pacific, Robinsons Land and the group’s industrial investments.

The pandemic soon tested that transition, especially at Cebu Pacific. Gokongwei’s tenure has therefore involved both continuity and difficult portfolio choices: preserving a founder-led culture while professionalising decisions, strengthening balance sheets and deciding where a diversified family group should concentrate its capital.
